Congress Finds Authority to Protect Voting Rights

Freedom to Vote Act Advances

Congress has found that the Constitution of the United States grants explicit and broad authority to protect the right to vote. The Freedom to Vote Act (S. 4), which has passed the Senate, improves access to the ballot for all Americans and advances the principles of the Fifteenth Amendment, which states that the right of citizens to vote shall not be denied or abridged.

Key Provisions of the Freedom to Vote Act

The Freedom to Vote Act includes a number of provisions to expand access to the ballot box, including:

  • Automatic voter registration for all eligible Americans
  • Same-day voter registration
  • Early voting for at least 15 days
  • No-excuse absentee voting
  • Restoration of voting rights for formerly incarcerated individuals

These provisions would make it easier for all Americans to exercise their right to vote, regardless of their race, income, or zip code.
